Tech Tip of the Day: Unplug Your Laptop—and Inspect the Charger While You’re At It
Laptops are made to move. But if you leave yours plugged in all the time, you could be quietly damaging your battery—and ignoring a potential safety risk.
Here’s why unplugging (and checking your charger) should be part of your routine:
🔋 1. Batteries Need to Breathe
Keeping your laptop plugged in 24/7 may feel convenient, but it puts constant strain on the battery. Over time, that shortens its health and leads to:
Shorter battery life
Slower performance
Earlier need for a battery replacement
Best practice:
Let your battery drain to about 40–50% now and then before recharging. Once it's full, unplug it again.
🔌 2. Don’t Ignore the Charger
Cables wear out. Chargers overheat. Connectors loosen. And if you never unplug, you might not notice until something fails (or sparks).
Take 30 seconds to inspect:
Is the charging brick warm or hot?
Are there frayed wires, bite marks, or bends near the plug?
Does the connector feel loose or flicker when you move it?
If you see damage, replace it. A $30 charger is cheaper than fried electronics.
🧠 Bonus Tip:
Avoid charging your laptop on a bed, couch, or other soft surface—these trap heat and can cause overheating over time.
